Anna Ostrovsky

Born in Moscow, I grew up in New Jersey from the age of eight and graduated from Livingston High School before earning degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. In 2015, my husband and I returned to New Jersey with our family and made Short Hills our home. Our three children are now 7, 11 and 12, and with my youngest just beginning second grade, our family has many years ahead in the Millburn Township schools.

I became more closely engaged with our school district when my youngest was preparing to enter kindergarten. Having experienced the private pre-school and kindergarten attended by my older children, I was incredibly impressed by Glenwood School – particularly its warm, child-focused environment and the dedication of its teachers and staff. As I began paying closer attention to issues such as elementary class sizes, I wanted to better understand how decisions affecting our schools were made. I began attending Board of Education meetings, learning more about district policies and priorities, and becoming increasingly involved in our schools. I have volunteered every year in a variety of capacities, enjoy the community very much, and am happy to contribute my time.

Professionally, my background is in finance, risk management and leadership. After beginning my career in investment banking, I earned an MBA and joined GE Structured Finance, where, in addition to underwriting new investments, I managed and restructured a troubled portfolio. I later joined Goldman Sachs, working at the intersection of banking and risk. I was promoted to Managing Director and spent more than a decade at the firm.

Throughout my career, I have been responsible for evaluating complex issues, balancing competing priorities, managing risk, making difficult decisions with imperfect information, and building and leading high-performing teams. I believe that organizations succeed by attracting talented, passionate people, giving them the support they need to excel, and assessing results.

My wife and I have lived in Millburn for over ten years. Our two children, now in 4th and 8th grade, have come up through this district from the beginning — so most of what I know about our schools I’ve learned the ordinary way: at back-to-school nights, in the pickup line, and over dinner hearing how the day actually went.

I’ve also spent a fair number of evenings in the audience at Board of Education meetings — not as a candidate, just as a parent who wanted to understand how decisions here get made and what the board weighs when the answer isn’t obvious. I’d be joining a body I’ve already watched work.

Professionally, I lead analytics at HSBC, where a growing part of my work is helping a large institution figure out what AI can responsibly do — what to adopt, what to hold off on, and how to tell a real improvement from a well-marketed one. Outside of work, I’ve spent years coaching recent graduates and women re-entering the workforce through job searches and interviews — slow, one-person-at-a-time work that taught me how often the gap between a capable person and an opportunity is just someone willing to explain how the process works.

Christian Germa

My wife and I moved to Millburn with our four boys twelve years ago. Three have since graduated from our public schools, and our youngest is a junior at Millburn High School — so we’ve now seen this district from just about every angle it offers.

I retired from a full-time career in project finance and have spent over twenty years as an independent board member for public and private companies. I currently serve part-time as CFO of a biotech company developing new cancer treatments. A school board isn’t a corporate board, but the underlying work rhymes: setting a shared vision, communicating clearly with the people you answer to, balancing ambition against financial discipline, and respecting the line between governing and managing — between the Board’s role and the Superintendent’s. This role also asks for real time, and my part-time schedule means I have it to give.

In our community, I’ve volunteered with the Millburn Education Foundation’s Rocktoberfest fundraiser and others, served as a church deacon, taught Sunday school, and chaperoned a number of service and mission trips.
